It is not the cataract returning. A cataract cannot come back once the natural lens is out. The thin membrane holding your new lens in place has gone cloudy instead. This is posterior capsule opacification, or PCO, and it happens to about one in five people after cataract or lens replacement surgery.
A YAG laser makes a small opening in the cloudy membrane so light passes through clearly again. Nothing is cut and the implant stays where it is. Once the opening is made, the capsule cannot cloud over again.
All three can have other causes, so the first step is a proper look at the eye.
Months or years after surgery, a gradual haze that new glasses do not fix. Often one eye first.
Headlights, low sun and bright screens bother you in a way they did not just after the operation.

Drops widen the pupil and numb the eye. You sit at a laser much like the microscope used for eye checks, chin on a rest. Mr Mukherjee places a small lens against the eye to focus the laser and applies a series of quick pulses to the cloudy membrane. You may hear clicks and see flashes. There is no pain.
The laser itself takes under five minutes. You are with us for about an hour, most of it waiting for the drops to work.
Your vision is blurred for a few hours from the drops, so you cannot drive home. Most people notice the improvement within hours. Floaters are common for a few days, then clear. A pressure check follows a week or two later.
