Specialised laser correction (blended vision, Presbyond, Supracor). Unlike standard laser eye surgery, it reshapes the cornea so you focus near and far, and corrects any distance prescription at the same time.

A disc of processed corneal collagen thinner than a hair, placed under a thin flap in one eye in about 15 minutes. Nothing synthetic and nothing removed, and it can be taken out again. We are one of the first UK centres to offer it.

Lens implant

Premium multifocal laser lens replacement surgery

The lens inside the eye is replaced with a trifocal implant that focuses near, middle and far. A cataract can then never develop.

Why reading gets harder after 45

From about 45 the lens inside the eye stiffens and stops focusing up close. Standard laser eye surgery corrects distance only, so it never helped with reading.

Who this suits

Laser treatment for reading glasses is usually right for people who:

  • are between roughly 45 and 60
  • need reading glasses, with or without a distance prescription
  • have healthy eyes with no early cataract
  • want to be rid of glasses for most of the day

From the mid-fifties a multifocal lens implant is usually the better answer, and we will say so.

Reading glasses questions

Can laser eye surgery get rid of reading glasses?
Yes. Standard laser corrects distance only. The latest presbyopia laser profile shapes the cornea for near and far, so you read without glasses and keep your distance vision.
What is Allotex?
A very thin disc of processed corneal collagen placed under a thin flap in one eye to give it a little extra curve for reading. It can be removed. We are one of the first UK centres offering it. Read more about Allotex.
Which one is right for me?
If you also wear glasses for distance, the laser corrects both at once. If your distance vision is fine and only the reading has gone, Allotex. From the mid-fifties, a multifocal lens implant is usually the better fix. Your scans settle it.
Will I still need reading glasses?
For most of the day, no. Very small print in poor light may still be easier with a pair.
Does it last?
The change to the cornea does. The lens inside the eye keeps ageing, so near vision can drift over the years. Some patients have a top-up later.
I had laser eye surgery years ago. Can I have this?
Often, yes. Both corneal treatments can follow earlier laser surgery if the cornea is healthy. The scans at your consultation will show.
